1. Florida State (Last Weeks Rank 1) (1-0)
Mitch: Bland offense against a heavy run blitz so the Noles turned to working on the passing game. Don't expect any wrinkles this week with Charleston Southern either, the coaches don't want to give Oklahoma anything to game plan for. The defense was solid, very solid. Interesting tidbit, Gregg Reid is suspended for one game; most likely for a skipped class or testing positive for weed, always one of the two. Here comes Xavier Rhodes!
Chris: Florida State seemed to come out focused and ready for Louisiana-Monroe and should come out this weekend and do the same. They don't need to have their eyes on the Oklahoma game on the 17th. Florida State's defense kept points off the board and looked very strong against weaker talent. We didn't learn too much but they proved they are deserving of this top spot.
2. Virginia Tech (LW 2) (1-0)
Mitch: They will be here unless they lose to someone. Their schedule is weaker than usual, which will afford them a better win/loss than last year with a team that is not as good. However, they smoked App State, so no repeat of JMU.
Chris: David Wilson is fast. Logan Thomas looked good. The secondary is tough. The wide receivers are studs. The team came out and beat a good Appalachian State team but they have a tough test in Greenville this weekend against East Carolina.
3. UNC (LW 6) (1-0)
Pat: Give it to these guys with all the off-season commotion, their heads seem to be clear. Both sides of the ball seem to be running on all cylinders. Game ball goes to Bryn Renner. 22 of 23 for 277 yards. Outstanding debut for the kid. High five to Everett Withers. This coaching thing’s not so tough.
Chris: UNC proved the most to me this weekend due to the solid play of Renner. If the offense can play like that, then UNC's defense will be good enough for this team to play well. I don't want to jump on the Renner bandwagon yet but if we see close to the same game against Rutgers, UNC could make some noise in the ACC.
4. Maryland (LW 5) (1-0)
Pat: Depleted or not, it's never an easy task to beat Miami. And even so, this was the only true test for an ACC team this weekend, other than Boston College against Northwestern. Maryland past the test, not with flying colors, but they still defeated a decent Miami team. The truth is, they have a good quarterback and decent skills players. The ACC field is top heavy with a 4 or 5 evenly matched teams of decent proportion in the middle. Maryland fits into this category and will likely not be seen as a top 5 team in the ACC by the end of the season. But, for now they deserve a slot atop the few.
Mitch: They have a good young QB and are a very well coached team. In a sloppy weather game they almost gave it away, but they hung with a very talented Miami team. Good for them. Replacing "the Fridge" will be remembered as a smart move.
5. NC State (LW 3) (1-0)
Pat: Who expected the Liberty Flames to be so feisty? This was a one possession game more than halfway through. Hopefully, this is not an indication of things going forward. Blame it on opening day jitters, Tom O’Brien is a good enough coach to make sure any hesitations are left behind moving forward. Good thing is, they don’t have a competitive foe for a few more weeks when they’ll head to Cincinatti. 72-10 against Austin Peay? So you guys don’t have a second or third string?
Chris: The Mike Glennon experience came in with a whimper. He had a decent stat line 18 of 31 for 156 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. The positive from this game is that NC State was pushed by Liberty and came out victorious. This was a good test for their first game and winning should be a benefit in a close game later in the season.
6. Clemson (LW 4) (1-0)
Chris: Once again we had a new quarterback that played well. Tajh Boyd completed 20 of 30 passes for 264 yards with three touchdowns and only one interception. The ACC is very young at quarterback right now, but in a few years this league could be full of dominate quarterbacks. This weekend Clemson plays Wofford in what should be another tune up game for Clemson who has Auburn the next weekend.
Mitch: Started to slip last week but then pulled away. They are not the most talented group, but they will win enough.
7. Georgia Tech (LW Tied for 7) (1-0)
Chris: Georgia Tech passed for 365 yards. Let that sink in, 365 yards in the air. You didn't miss them making a coaching change Paul Johnson is still there. If, and that's a big if, Georgia Tech develops a passing game, that changes this whole offense. They have beat teams the last few years with the ground game but if they are able to throw they will surprise people and scare defensive coordinators.
Pat: If you take any of my advice this football season, make sure you’re paying attention right here. Whatever you do, don’t make bets on Georgia Tech success. With all the great wins among ACC teams in the first week, many can be misconstrued (I’ll probably eat one or two of my words from this week at some point, myself), but you can trust, the “Rambling Wreck” is not going bowling this year. (Pitiful fight song by the way. Sorry I have nothing against Atlanta, truly, that’s more or less of a shout out to my buddy Chris’s terrible taste in fight songs; seriously, I look forward to hearing ‘Auld Lang Syne’ the two times UVA scores a touchdown in a given season more than I do hearing about how engineering can be hellacious, but I digress) It’s a tired system and the talent is not there. I could be wrong, but I’m not. These guys need to enjoy this success before it bottoms out in 3 weeks.
8. UVA (LW Tied for 7) (1-0)
Pat: Mark my words, this team is going to be good. Maybe not the most talented competition, but they were close to a shutout in a game with 25 possessions. A visit to Chapel Hill in two weeks is going to be a good test to see what they are made of. But, as of now the Wahoos are looking forward to an atypical football season. Celebrate the big win guys.
Mitch: First test of the season is against UNC. They lose by 20.
9. Miami (LW 10) (0-1)
Mitch: They have great talent and a good coach, but a lack of depth. That man is a professional and knows what it takes. His players played hard and even though they lost, the close loss is enough reason to give them hope and not quit this season. I am saying it here, they take down Ohio State.
Pat: The final results of the sanctions that face Miami have not yet been declared, but with the guys missing in this game against Maryland, the sun is certainly going down on the program for a while. This should result in more than a few loses this season. Under .500 would be a fair estimate with the perspective resulting from their bout with Maryland. It’s tough to imagine the emotions circulating for Al Golden right now. Frustrated would come to mind. Well, he better get used to it.
10. Boston College (LW 9) (0-1)
Mitch: Yep, they lost to Northwestern.
Chris: Should we have expected Boston College to beat Northwestern? I know I did and I am disappointed that they did not. Once again, the ACC cannot come out strong to begin a season and it's games like this that hurt the ACC.
11. Wake Forest (LW Tied for 11) (0-1)
Mitch: Sorry Wake fans, an enrollment of 3500 is not enough to compete at this level. I am just glad the Noles have them after playing Oklahoma and Clemson back-to-back.
Pat: Uh, helmet sticker for effort?
12. Duke (LW Tied for 11) (0-1)
Pat: Give me that helmet sticker back.
Chris: Duke lost to Richmond for the third time since 2006. It's easy to write this off as Duke losing and they lose to everyone but Cutcliffe should be doing better by now. This shouldn't happen at Duke, not again. It's Cutliffe's fourth season at Duke and I know no one is calling for him to be fired but maybe they should. The fan base and boosters should show they want football to be decent and not the laughing stock of the whole country. Unless they really don't care about football and only love basketball. I doubt that's the case for most alumni and they should get angry and do something about this football program.
